Description
Fondamenta della Misericordia (foundation of the Misericordia) is a “street” in Venice, in Cannaregio district, near the Scuola Grande della Misericordia. It runs parallel to the Rio de la Misericordia, one of the main canals of Cannaregio.
“Fondamenta” means “foundation” in Italian, and it describes the walking bank along a canal. It was (and still is today) a popular area to load and unload boats, kind of like a dock.
The chalcography was then coloured by hand using the watercolor technique. The abbreviation P.d.A. at the bottom left, instead of the serial number, means “artist’s proof” (P.d.A. “Prova d’Artista”).
